Indah Coffee Co. to open retail location

February 8, 2017

Indah Coffee Co., that got its start at the All Local Farmers Market, will open its first retail location in the redeveloped Dunn Electric Co. building at 2238 Sumter St. in the historic Cottontown Neighborhood.

The coffee roaster will take the majority of space in the 12,000-square-foot building that is being redeveloped by Cason Development Group. The building will also house a second location for Circa Barber Shop.

Indah Coffee Co. will include a retail coffee café offering espresso drinks, brewed coffee, nitro cold brew coffee, pastries, fresh sandwiches and salads, and freshly roasted coffee, as well as a beer and wine bar.

A main focus will be Indah’s commercial coffee roasting operation. The roaster will be centrally located and will be visible from the coffee shop. Indah will also have a “cupping lab,” where coffee can be tasted and tested.

“We wanted to keep it coffee centric,” said Nick Hauser who founded Indah along with his wife Stefanie. “Coffee is the most complex beverage, way more complex than wine,” he said. Indah wants to provide the customer a complete coffee experience. “The idea is to connect the roasting process to the customer,” Stefanie Hauser said.

Indah, which means beautiful in Indonesian, began life in 2010 at the farmers market at 701 Whaley Street, and relocated when it became the Soda City Market on Main Street. Originally just a coffee roaster, Indah began serving fresh brewed coffee at the Saturday market in response to customer demand.

The decision to have a retail outlet was a further response to customers and a need to have more space for Indah’s commercial roasting operation, which has been housed in a renovated garage, Nick Hauser said. Customers at the Saturday market always want to know, “Where is your retail shop,” Hauser said.

Indah’s roasting operation has gone from a portable roaster at the farmers market to a commercial roaster supplying coffee to a number of area restaurants and stores including Motor Supply, the War Mouth, Rosewood Market and Earth Fare.

Renovations to 2238 Sumter St. are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2017, and Indah hopes to open in March.

Indah and Circa join other businesses including the War Mouth restaurant and the planned Cotton Town Brew Lab brewery, in a revitalized Cottontown commercial area.

“We are excited to be a part of the growth of Cottontown and hope our shop will become a favorite in the community,” Stefanie Hauser said.
