It’s time time for a detox, but not a physical one
September 15, 2017By Brian Maynor
When I hear the word ‘detox’ the first thing that pops into my mind is ‘green juice’, which literally makes me turn green, but that’s not the detox I’m proposing.
I challenge you to a spiritual detox.
Now before you stop reading, this has nothing to do with religion. I am using the word ‘spiritual’ to mean the non-physical aspects of ourselves. For example, what we think, say and how we feel.
As a whole, we’re a judgmental species. In fact, I bet not a day goes by that we don’t have a negative thought or word about someone else, and that negativity takes a toll on us. Whether we say it to be funny and pithy or as a sharp criticism, negativity shifts our focus from ourselves and directs it towards others. We can’t control others. We can’t even influence them without their consent. So the only reason we have to judge others is to make ourselves feel better.
Guess what? If we stop focusing on others, we can actually refocus on ourselves and feel better without any negativity or need to put others down in the process. That’s the whole concept behind this spiritual detox.
So, if you accept my challenge here’s all you need to know:
1. The challenge. Simply try not to think or say anything negative about someone else for as long as you can. It doesn’t matter if you try it for an hour, a day, a week or longer I guarantee you’ll see results in how you feel, what you think and what you say.
2. The goal. To reduce or remove gossip and judgment from our lives so we stop harming others with our words and reclaim the spotlight in our own life.
3. The reason. We live in a very toxic world. Whether it’s the news, reality television or even scripted sitcoms, negativity and judgment are everywhere, and even used as punch lines. Think about that for a minute. As much as I love the character Karen Walker, and can’t wait for Will & Grace to return, she is a prime example of how negativity has been turned into a form of entertainment.
We live in an extremely toxic world. Our culture seems to center around negativity and being negative to each other, even as a form of entertainment. This challenge won’t change all of that, but it will change how we engage and respond to it personally, which is all we can do.
