Public Relations Coordinator
October 19, 2021The public relations coordinator supports the communications and media relations needs for academic units represented by one of several interdisciplinary brand teams and provides multimedia content and planning for the Integrated Communications team within the Office of Communications and Public Affairs.
Under the supervision of an associate director of integrated communications, the PR coordinator is a key member of the brand team that advises and supports on projects that are deemed shared priorities of the university and academic units that comprise the brand team. The PR coordinator will advise administrators, faculty and staff on effective communications and media relations; develop communications plans and creative briefs for major initiatives; and work collaboratively with other units in the Office of Communications and Public Affairs on multi-media projects and initiatives.
The PR coordinator has knowledge of a broad range of journalistic and multimedia tools, such as media software for news distribution and monitoring, as well as professional guidelines for journalism and public relations. In addition, the PR coordinator will have proven expertise in written and visual communication for print, web and social media, an ability to make complex research and concepts accessible to varied audiences, and proven success to pitch and place news stories regionally and nationally.
Bachelor’s degree and 5 years experience related to the development and dissemination of informational material.
Bachelor’s degree and five to seven years of professional experience in a client facing communications, public relations role with emphasis on media relations and social media. Writing for broad audiences as well as those in higher education also is highly preferred, as is experience writing about varied topics that represent a wide range of academic disciplines.
The PR coordinator is an organized, enterprising self-starter with executive presence and a proven ability to successfully pitch and place news stories and create engaging content across all media. In addition, the PR coordinator is proficient in and adaptable to new technology including production management and team collaboration software. A mastery of AP style is required.
A proven ability to meet deadlines is required as is the ability to work in a rapid-response, team environment. Project management skills and ability to meet tight deadlines are a must. Verbal communication skills; an open, collaborative approach; and ability to maintain confidentiality are necessary for success in this role. Demonstrated experience in researching topics, interviewing and writing varied news and feature stories as well as pitching and placing news stories are essential. A desire to develop professionally and keep abreast of developing trends in communications is required.
