John Nichols of Bluestein, Nichols, Thompson, and Delgado honored with Trial and Appellate Advocacy Award

January 22, 2016

The South Carolina Bar honored John Shannon Nichols, a founding member of Bluestein, Nichols, Thompson, and Delgado (BNTD) with its Trial and Appellate Advocacy Award on Friday, January 22 during the Bar’s annual convention in Charleston, SC.

The Trial and Appellate Advocacy Section of the South Carolina Bar bestows the award, which recognizes a lawyer who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to trial and appellate advocacy in the legal profession. Award recipients must demonstrate substantial dedication to the furtherance of the art and techniques of trial and appellate advocacy, display exceptional skill and conduct and spend significant time and effort to educate and train attorneys in the areas of trial and appellate advocacy.

Rather than given annually, the award is only presented when the Trial and Appellate Advocacy section of the SC Bar believes a worthy candidate has been nominated. Nichols, who has spent his career going above and beyond in the service of others and advocating for fairness under the law, is only the fifth recipient of the award.

“I am so happy John is being recognized by his peers for his dedication to appellate legal work,” said Marti Bluestein, founding partner of BNTD. “He has a passion for the law, especially appellate law, and is extremely dedicated to mentoring young lawyers and helping fellow bar members sort out their complicated cases.”

Nichols is also the recent recipient of the inaugural G. Dewey Oxner, Jr. Mentor of the Year Award, which recognizes attorneys who represent the highest standards of civility, integrity and professionalism. He is a commissioner for the South Carolina Commission on Indigent Defense, a member of the South Carolina Board of Law Examiners and the South Carolina Bar Professional Responsibility Committee. He is past president and a current board member of the South Carolina Association for Justice and chairs the association’s President’s Council.

His practice areas at BNTD include litigation support and appeals, business litigation, personal injury, wrongful death, medical malpractice and criminal defense.
