July 4th Week & Weekend – Public Safety Checkpoints
July 2, 2014COLUMBIA, SC – Columbia Police Chief William “Skip” Holbrook announces that in an effort to keep drivers safe this holiday week and weekend, public safety checkpoints have been planned throughout Columbia.
CPD’s Traffic Safety Unit will enhance patrols, conduct DUI and speed enforcement in various locations including a major Interstate, hospitality areas and parts of North and South Columbia.
These areas were selected based on traffic violations that have occurred including DUI and speeding incidents, and in an effort to reduce traffic collisions.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the University of South Carolina’s Division of Law Enforcement and Safety will assist CPD in the overall effort.
Every vehicle that enters the checkpoint will be stopped.
Officers will check drivers for:
* Valid driver’s license
* Possible Impairment
* Seatbelt Use
* Proper child restraints (when applicable)
* Any other violations of law that may be observed.
Safety Tips:
* Find a designated driver if you are planning to consume alcohol
* Wear your seatbelt
* Obey the rules of the road
* Do not speed
* Stay alert
* Do not text and drive
Drivers are encouraged to call 9-1-1 if they suspect that a driver is impaired.
