Event at Fluor Field Promotes Healthy Lifestyles for Over 2,300 Greenville County Students

GREENVILLE, SC –  The Junior League of Greenville held their 7th annual Home Run for Healthy Kids® event on Thursday, Oct. 23rd and Friday, Oct. 24th at Fluor Field. The Home Run for Healthy Kids®event invited fifteen Greenville County schools, approximately 2,300 children, to participate in a free, educational field trip at Fluor Field. In the past seven years, the Junior League of Greenville has partnered with Greenville County Schools and generous sponsors to reach 15,000 students with the goal of improving the community by teaching children to adopt healthier lifestyles. The Junior League of Greenville started this event after research showed staggering statistics for obesity, accidental injuries and unhealthy youth.

“Now in our seventh year, we have seen a significant impact on the lives of children in Greenville County schools,” said Elizabeth McSherry, Home Run for Healthy Kids® Event Chair for the Junior League of Greenville. “This event offers students a fun, interactive way to learn about living a healthy life. Our activity stations are designed to engage children in memorable ways so when they leave they can share the new information with their families and spread our ‘healthy’ message.”

Home Run for Healthy Kids® is designed to engage students to practice healthy lifestyles and to ensure students receive the support they need to grow up safe, happy, healthy and thriving. This is accomplished through hands-on learning activities, giveaways and educational information sessions. During Home Run for Healthy Kids®, Fluor Field will be transformed into four “zones” of education and entertainment that will highlight ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Zones will include safety, physical well-being, nutrition and healthy lifestyles. In addition to planning and administering Home Run for Healthy Kids®, the Junior League of Greenville will provide the funds needed for transportation to and from the event and will also provide a backpack, filled with quality giveaways from various sponsors and partners, to each student attendee. Exciting new events added this year include a station by the Upcountry History Museum who will be sharing about the history and health benefits of local produce and a station by Operation Lifesaver talking about railroad safety.

“Home Run for Healthy Kids® has been an event that aligns perfectly with the Junior League of Greenville’s mission, as we are a group of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving the community,” said Kathryn Freedman, President of the Junior League of Greenville. “We are fortunate to live in a generous community like Greenville, which in turn allows us to put on these events for the benefit of children.”

The Junior League of Greenville is proud to partner with 15+ community agencies to execute this year’s Home Run for Healthy Kids®. Greenville Health System Children’s Hospital is this year’s Platinum Sponsor. The Greenville Drive, serving as the Venue Sponsor, will provide the biggest in-kind sponsorship. Other generous partners confirmed include Eyes in Motion, Greenville Family Partnership, Greenville Health System Children’s Advocacy groups Safe Kids Upstate and School Health (Choosy Rx), Greenville Health System ENT, Greenville Library System, Greenville Pediatric Dentistry, Hurricane Martial Arts, Live Well Greenville, The Upcountry History Museum – Furman University, Rick Floyd (Greenville County Schools-Internet Safety), The Children’s Museum of the Upstate, South Carolina Operation Lifesaver, Greenville Gymnastics and the YMCA of Greenville.
