Laurens County Museum Hosts Business After Hours – Highlights Museum Accomplishments
May 29, 2023Last week the Laurens County Chamber of Commerce held their “Business After Hours” event at the Laurens County Museum.
The crowd enjoyed live piano music and refreshments as they networked among the exhibits in the museum.
Following a time of networking, Teresa Noble, President of the Laurens County Museum Association Board of Directors welcomed the group and provided a brief update on the museum.
The Laurens County Museum opened its doors on the Square for the first time on January 2, 2022, and the county has benefited from many programs and the event facility. The renovation of the Witherspoon building was the work of 10 years during which board and volunteers labored to achieve its present state without incurring debt.
The museum does not charge an entrance fee for visitors, and they often provide meeting space for non-profits and community groups. According to Noble, last year at least 20 community groups benefited from the use of the Magnolia Room and the Burns Room.
During 2022, visitors to the museum exceeded 2500. They came from 57 other towns in South Carolina, 30 other states, and 3 foreign countries. This year is on track to be even more.
“From January to April we had 702 total visitors, 458 of whom are from Laurens County, 200 were from 44 other towns in South Carolina, 28 were from 12 other states, and 6 were from 3 foreign countries,” said Noble. “The bottom line is that in addition to the educational opportunities provided, the Laurens County Museum is a plus for tourism and our local economy.”
A series of lectures related to the Revolutionary War is being planned for the coming months. One of the lectures will feature Paul Wood, the author of a book about Dicey Langston who was one of our local Revolutionary War heroines.
Another initiative, the Laurens County Stories project will chronical the fascinating stories of long-time residents of the county.
The Laurens County Museum was the perfect place to have a “business after hours” event.
