Lexington Medical Center Welcomes First Female Heart Surgeon in the Midlands

WEST COLUMBIA, SC – Lexington Medical Center is pleased to welcome Dee Prastein, MD, to its network of care. She is the first female heart surgeon in the Midlands.
A graduate of George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., Dr. Prastein earned her medical degree from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in Richmond. She went on to complete her general surgery residency at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore and her cardiothoracic surgery residency at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Dr. Prastein has world-class training in cardiothoracic surgery, studying with some of the most prestigious heart programs in the world. Her intensive work includes experience with the most state-of-the-art procedures available today. During her residency, she participated in extensive research on heart failure. She then worked at Papworth Hospital in England, a facility famous for being one of the first in Europe to perform heart transplants. Prior to joining LMC, Dr. Prastein served as the lead cardiothoracic surgeon at Duke Regional Hospital in Durham, N.C.

Dr. Prastein joins Jeffrey Travis, MD, at Lexington Cardiovascular Surgery to provide cardiovascular surgical consultations, follow-up care and vascular labs as well as a variety of cardiovascular services, including aortic/mitral valve replacement, coronary artery bypass grafting, and procedures for ascending, thoracic and abdominal aneurysms, peripheral vascular disease, lung masses, and carotid arteries.
