February 18, 2016
Lexington County School District One congratulates three high school students from Lexington One who attained finalist standing in the 2016 National Merit® Scholarship Program competition.

The Lexington District One National Merit Scholarship finalists are Rosemary Coskrey and Ashley Whitworth Fellers from Lexington High and Elizabeth Farrar from River Bluff High.

Coskrey, Farrar and Fellers will compete against other students who attained finalist standing in an effort to win one of 2,500 National Merit Scholarships worth $2,500. Students who attained finalist standing also will be considered for about 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards and about 3,900 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards that will be presented by about 190 colleges and universities. The 2016 National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced later this year, beginning in April.

The applications of students who attained finalist standing in the National Merit Scholarship competition were evaluated based on the students’ academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities and employment history as well as honors and awards that they received. National Merit Scholarship recipients are selected based on their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

About 1.5 million students from more than 22,000 high schools nationwide entered the 2016 National Merit Scholarship competition by taking the Preliminary SAT or National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. About 15,000 of those students attained finalist standing in the competition.
