Local Culinary Professional Launches Charleston’s Newest Underground Supper Club, L.I.M.E., September 2010
August 18, 2010CHARLESTON, SC – August 18, 2010 – L.I.M.E. (Local. Impromptu.Moveable. Evening.) is Charleston’s newest underground experiencecreated by local chef Renata Dos Santos. Seizing on the recent rise inpopularity of the underground supper club movement, L.I.M.E. seeks toprovide guests a fun, relaxed and memorable top-secret dining experiencewhere they can enjoy a stellar meal while making new connections overfood. The first installment of L.I.M.E. will take place Saturday,September 18 starting at 5 p.m. Dos Santos will serve as the chef forthis initial event, and there will be a special guest mixologist. TheL.I.M.E. location will only be revealed two days before the event viaemail to confirmed guests.
L.I.M.E. will incorporate the traditions of local and sustainabledining, community and family, and adhere to the Slow Food mission ofreconnecting locals with the people, traditions, plants, animals, andwaters that produce our food. In keeping true to that spirit, CulinaryInstitute of Charleston graduates and graduating students will befeatured chefs, pairing up with more established local chefs onoccasion. The chefs will work with local farms and artisans to create amultiple course meal. Staying true to the nature of liming, the chefswill also be paired with sommeliers and mixologists, who will createsignature drinks for the event.
The name for this new club is derived from the verb “to lime” or noun“lime,” which is Trinidadian slang for a group of friends hanging outtogether on a beach, by a river, at a home, or on a street corner. A“lime” can be large or small, pre-arranged or impromptu, and alwaysinvolves food and beverages. Dos Santos is a native of Trinidad and toher, “liming” is not merely a slang term but an outlook on life thatvalues good times with good friends and defines a significant part ofthe culture in Trinidad.
Tickets to the September L.I.M.E. are $125, and a portion of theproceeds will benefit Simply Divine Garden, a local non-profit thatplants personalized organic gardens at the homes of people undergoingtreatment for cancer. Tickets will go on sale August 18 and can bepurchased through the event web site, www.limeincharleston.com.Upon purchasing tickets, guests will receive an e-mail that will be thebeginning of a scavenger hunt of sorts, which will ultimately lead themto the location for the dinner. Chef Renata Dos Santos originally hails from the twin islands ofTrinidad and Tobago. Dos Santos graduated from Culinary Institute ofCharleston in 2008 and has won several culinary awards, including the2009 Laura Hewitt Culinary Legend Award and the SC Governor’s ConferenceTourism Student Award.
