July 27, 2017

GREENVILLE, SC – Ivory Mathews, Executive Director of The Greenville Housing Authority (TGHA) was one of twelve nationwide who were recently recognized by the Veterans Administration with the Secretary’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Service for Homeless Veterans. Ms. Mathews was a top achiever in the Community Organization category.

Ms. Mathews leads the housing authority’s initiative to eliminate veteran homelessness through promotion of the Housing and Urban Development Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program. Ms. Mathews utilizes traditional methods of marketing (brochures, flyers, and cards) to promote the program, as well as social media marketing (Facebook campaigns) to reach the veteran population in the Greenville area.

The HUD-VASH program provides rental housing assistance vouchers specifically targeted towards homeless veterans. The Greenville Housing Authority works closely with the US Department of Veterans Affairs to facilitate the program. In addition to the rental assistance provided through the voucher program, the Veterans Affairs case management team provides supportive services to HUD-VASH voucher holders.

The Greenville Housing Authority received 123 HUD-VASH vouchers to serve homeless veteran households. All HUD-VASH referrals are received through the US Department of Veterans Affairs case management team.

“The Greenville Housing Authority is pleased to assist area veterans through the HUD-VASH program and help those who are struggling with homelessness. TGHA is glad to help facilitate this program which provides a stable home environment for veterans and their families,” stated Mathews.

If you are a homeless veteran and interested in receiving a HUD-VASH voucher, please contact the Greenville VA Outpatient Clinic at 864-299-1600 for details.
