NAI Earle Furman Broker Named Big Brother of the Year

August 27, 2010

GREENVILLE, SC – August 2010 – NAI Earle Furman, LLC retail broker Jake Van Gieson was recently named Big Brother of the Year in Greenville County by Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Upstate (BBBS). Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Upstate helps children reach their full potential through professionally supported one-to-one relationships with proven results.

Jake became involved with the organization three years ago and immediately formed a strong bond with his little brother Urias. Jake often takes him to Clemson games, family get-togethers, and most recently a trip to the beach.   “Jake was chosen because he went above and beyond to provide opportunities not only his little brother, but also to other children in need,” said Kris Alongi, Executive Assistant at BBBS.  In the community Jake coaches Urias’s football team and reached out to BBBS to encourage more children to join the team. He often runs carpool for those without transportation so they can attend games, practices and even post game pizza.

“It is people like him that make this program so successful. Urias was unable to attend the BBBS awards ceremony because he was participating in Jake’s sister’s wedding – what a testimony to the relationship they have!” said Terry Hypes, CEO at BBBS.

“My family and I are very blessed to have Urias as a part of our lives.  I have learned so much from him that has helped me become a better man.  The Big Brother Program is as much a benefit for the volunteer as it is the boy.  I would encourage everyone to take the time to make a difference in a young man’s life,” Van Gieson commented.
