National iconic design magazine recognizes Chernoff Newman with two awards

January 17, 2018

PRINT magazine, sponsor of one of the most well-respected design competitions in the graphic design industry, recently recognized Chernoff Newman’s talent with two awards in its annual South regional design competition.

The integrated marketing communication agency won prestigious design awards for its comprehensive rebranding of the Charleston, S.C., International Airport and its integrated Fresh Is Best campaign for the South Carolina Department of Agriculture.

For the Charleston airport, the Chernoff Newman team wove together the city’s historic past and growing future – with an identity featuring ironwork patterns with a digital feel. The new identity and tagline, Your Travels, Our Pleasure, are applied inside the airport and around the region.

The S.C. Department of Agriculture’s Fresh on the Menu program is designed to support farmers and the state’s agriculture industry. It highlights the importance of connecting local restaurants with farmers in South Carolina to ensure strong support of the state’s economy. Chernoff Newman began its Fresh is Best campaign by designing and building a vertical living wall garden display that hosted video content of local chefs. The team then grew it to include outdoor ads, a mobile app, and a social media campaign that used the Pokémon craze to its fullest potential.

“For me, a top-ranked project has to have some scale to it—some heft and reach and ambition,” said South Region Judge Ellen Lupton, who is also curator of contemporary design at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City and director of the Graphic Design MFA program at Maryland Institute College of Art.

“We’re honored to be recognized for the creative and winning work we do for our clients,” said Chernoff Newman Creative Director Heather Price. “It’s rewarding for us to be chosen from some 4,000 top-notch entries that were judged in this premier national competition.”

Founded in 1940, PRINT seeks to build a dialogue about design by detailing the intersections of art and culture. Rather than focusing on the how-to of design, the experts who write for Print cover the why—why the world of design looks the way it does, how it has evolved, and why the way it looks matters.

The longest-running U.S., graphic design publication, it has won five National Magazine Awards—the industry’s highest honor.
