Nine Employees Honored with James B. Duke Awards

CHARLOTTE, NC – March 29, 2010 – Nine Duke Energy employees were honored today with the company’s James B. Duke Award – the company’s highest employee award for service to the company and community. The awards honor accomplishments performed in 2009.
Honored were:
- Tony Adcock of Charlotte, manager, power quality
- Lew Beck of Clemson, S.C., senior engineer at Oconee Nuclear Station
- Gary Lynn of Cincinnati, environment health & safety professional III
- Gary Mitchell of York, S.C., senior operations specialist at Catawba Nuclear Station
- Tim Striegel of Floyd County, Ind., engineer III at Gallagher Generating Station
- Catherine Heigel of Charlotte, president, Duke Energy South Carolina; formerly, associate general counsel
- Lara Nichols of Charlotte, associate general counsel
- Carol Shrum of Charlotte, vice president, rates
- Phil Stillman of Charlotte, general manager, regulatory accounting and planning
The James B. Duke Award continues the company’s long tradition of recognizing leadership and service in the community and the workplace.
Winners are nominated and selected by their peers. Here is a brief summary of the employees’ accomplishments:
Adcock has been a leading figure in Duke Energy’s rollout of new Smart Grid technologies that will allow better two-way communication between the company and its customers.
Beck has been internationally recognized for his advancements in pump technology. Many of his advancements are being used at Duke Energy’s nuclear stations to increase plant reliability.
Lynn was instrumental in helping a distressed motorist, who was contemplating suicide on a bridge over the Ohio River. Lynn’s efforts averted a tragedy and brought about a happy ending weeks later when he received heartfelt thanks from the motorist.
Mitchell was involved in a freak highway accident caused by a truck that injured a fellow co-worker riding along with him. Mitchell was able to make some quick decisions and got his co-worker to a local hospital. Many felt that waiting for emergency personnel would have taken too much time to save his passenger.
Striegel has been a “Jack of all trades” at Gallagher Generating Station in Indiana in recent years. He has earned the reputation of being an expert troubleshooter – no matter the problem, or time of day.
Heigel, Nichols, Shrum and Stillman worked together to carry out many of Duke Energy’s key regulatory objectives during the year – juggling legal and accounting issues with many internal and external stakeholders.
