Operation Inherent Resolve communications leader to be newest vice president
July 5, 2017CHARLESTON, S.C.− One of the most accomplished communications strategists in the U.S. Air Force will join The Citadel’s leadership team as the new vice president for communications and marketing. Col. John L. Dorrian, who graduated from The Citadel in 1990, will return to help lead his alma mater on July 24 after recently retiring from 25 years of distinguished military service. He was awarded the Legion of Merit upon retiring in June.
Immediately prior to assuming his role at The Citadel, Dorrian served as spokesperson for Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve, which is a military effort to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria by a coalition of more than 50 countries. In that role, Dorrian was principle military spokesperson as well as advisor to the task force commander and senior staff with regard to public affairs and communication matters. While deployed in this role, he conducted more than 400 national and international news media engagements.

John Rosa, Citadel president. “His experiences and achievements as a professional communicator during 25 years of service with the Air Force will contribute greatly to the success of our mission to educate and develop principled leaders.”
Before his deployment to Iraq, Dorrian served as director of public affairs for Air Force Space Command at Peterson Air Force Basein Colorado. He served as a public affairs officer at the wing, numbered air force, major command, Headquarters Air Force and combatant command levels. In addition, he commanded the 305th Mission Support Squadron, McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey, and deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan, as chief of press desk operations for the International Security Assistance Force.
Dorrian holds a master’s degree in public administration from Troy State University and a master’s degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from The Citadel. His Air Force service awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Air Force Achievement Medal.
