Center uses a multidisciplinary team approach to caring for patients

Palmetto Health-USC Medical Group offers treatment for back pain, neck pain, sciatic nerve pain, herniated discs and other spine-related conditions at the newly opened Palmetto Health-USC Spine Center. . The Center uses a multidisciplinary approach that includes a team of specialists from orthopedics, neurosurgery, psychiatry, physical therapy, orthotics and radiology who work together for the comprehensive care of the patients. The Palmetto Health-USC Spine Center has seven locations in the Columbia and Lexington areas. Some locations are co-located with existing orthopedic and neurosurgery practices.

Patients will initially be seen by one of the spine providers who will work with the team to determine the source of the pain and coordinate all care for the patient, whether it is physical therapy, image-guided spinal injections, pain management or surgery. Palmetto Health-USC Spine Center’s co-medical directors Gregory Grabowski, M.D., and Seth S. Molloy, D.O., believe that this approach is the best way to ensure patients get the care they need at the onset.

Molloy, said, “Working as a team ensures that we are looking at all options—surgical and nonsurgical—to best fit the patient’s medical condition.”

One of the major health conditions that will be treated at the Center is back pain. According to the National Institutes of Health, about 80 percent of adults experience low back pain at some point in their lifetime and it is one of the most common medical problems in the U.S. Although most cases of low back pain are not serious and respond to simple treatments, proper initial treatment is important.

Grabowski added, “Your neck and spine are at the center of everything you do – so if you experience any kind of pain there, everything hurts. Our goal at the spine center is to provide the appropriate level of care for each patient so that they have long-term pain relief. We offer many specialized services. Many patients will not need those, but we are privileged to have them available for those that do.”

Surgical and nonsurgical treatment options include:

  • Artificial disc replacement
  • Complex restorative spine surgery
  • Computer-assisted spine treatment
  • Epidural steroid injections
  • Joint injections
  • Interventional spine surgery and procedures
  • Physical medicine and rehabilitation
  • Microdiscectomy
  • Minimally invasive spine surgery
