Patriotic Window Display Competition Kicks Off in Downtown Laurens
June 11, 2024Businesses lining the historic Courthouse Square in downtown Laurens are engaging in a friendly competition to see who can create the most captivating patriotic-themed window and storefront decorations for the Flag Day to Independence Day season.
Members of the public are invited to downtown Laurens to vote on their favorite window or storefront display. Participating businesses will have ballots available, encouraging everyone to explore the Square and cast their vote for their favorite display.
In addition to the festive decorations, downtown businesses are introducing Laurence the Squirrel on the Square. This fun addition features a squirrel hidden in the displays, providing extra excitement for children who can join in the hunt for Laurence.
Diane Smith, owner of Designs by D, is spearheading the contest as the Chair of Main Street Laurens’ Design Committee. Known for her exceptional window displays, Diane will decorate her windows but will not compete. “We wanted everyone to feel like they had a shot at the title,” added Main Street Board Chair John Young with a smile.
Diane explained, “While this might seem like a simple contest, it really accomplishes many of our goals: It gives people a reason to come downtown and walk around the whole Square. It encourages us to dress up for company as thousands of people will be here for the City’s Independence Day celebration. And most importantly, it builds memories about our downtown for our children. I remember going downtown and the decorated windows when I was a little girl. I want that same special experience for our children and grandchildren, too.”
The contest kicks off during the “It’s Finally Friday!” event on June 14th, with winners announced during the “It’s Finally Friday!” event on June 28th. Visitors have two weeks to come down and vote for their favorite display.
