PHS head athletic trainer receives two prestigious awards
May 7, 2014PELION, SC – Pelion High Head Athletic Trainer George Wham was named the 2014 Athletic Trainer of the Year by the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association.
The award honors Wham for his contributions to high school sports and the athletic training profession in South Carolina. In recent years Wham has led the effort to pass the South Carolina Student Athlete Concussion Law and the South Carolina High School League Preseason Acclimatization Plan.
The University of South Carolina also selected Wham for the inaugural University of South Carolina Athletic Training Alumni of the Year Award. The award honors Wham for being an advocate for the athletic training profession in South Carolina.
In his 17th year as the PHS Head Athletic Trainer and Assistant Athletic Director, Wham coordinates sports medicine services and teaches sports medicine classes.
He holds an undergraduate degree from Presbyterian College and a master’s degree and doctorate degree from the University of South Carolina.
Wham is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, the South Carolina Athletic Trainers’ Association and the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association. He chairs the SCATA Governmental Affairs Committee, serves on the NATA District 3 Secondary Schools Committee and will serve as President of the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association during the 20142015 school year.
