Prisma Health Children’s Hospital-Midlands seeks to bolster kid-friendly surgical caps program with help from volunteers

Prisma Health Children’s Hospital-Midlands surgical cap program, called “Sew CAPtivating,” was launched about 14 years ago by the hospital’s Child Life specialists in the Midlands as part of their effort to provide compassionate, caring assistance to patients and their caregivers as they prepare for treatment and recovery related to surgery.
For years, every child scheduled for surgery has been offered the chance to choose a special surgery cap to wear and keep as a memento.
Patients are invited to pick a new cap for each surgery, even if they undergo multiple procedures. Child Life provides these caps thanks to a group of volunteer crafters, who ensure there’s always an on-hand selection of caps in fun, kid-friendly fabric designs.

Volunteers needed
Child Life Specialist Gayatri Reddy said, “We are seeking more volunteers to help keep a fun selection of caps always available for kids who need them. A kid-friendly surgical cap may seem like a small thing, but having the opportunity to choose a cap can make a scary time easier to face.”
Rhea Metcalf, a longtime program volunteer, has made more than 4000 caps along with friends from her quilting group, Palmetto Quilters. She said, “I really enjoy making them. And it’s an easy activity for anyone who enjoys sewing or is learning to sew and looking for a beginner-friendly project.”
