Richland One Helps Kick off Statewide Children’s Free Summer Meal Program

June 4, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – No child should go hungry and yet a half-million children in South Carolina are at greater risk of not having enough food to eat this summer. Richland One will host the statewide celebration to kick off the free children’s summer meal program at a news conference June 3 at 10 a.m. at Burton-Pack Elementary School, 111 Garden Drive. The event is being held in conjunction with the SC Department of Education’s Office of Health and Nutrition.

The charge to increase the number of children in the Midlands and surrounding areas receiving meals during the summer will be led by representatives from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Southeastern United Dairy Industry Association (SUDIA), as well as state and local officials, program sponsors and school district officials. Former NFL Carolina Panthers player Everette Brown will lead a fun exercise routine with children in the summer program at Burton-Pack.

From June 1 through August 14, Richland One and 80 other sponsors across the state will partner with the S.C. Department of Education to provide free meals to any child up to 18 years old through the Summer Food Program.

Churches, parks, children’s programs, or other public/private organizations that serve children are encouraged to take advantage of this free program. Any child can receive meals at designated sites throughout the state.
