Santee Cooper funding project promoting economic development in Rock Hill

Santee Cooper has provided the Rock Hill Economic Development Corp. a $767,500 grant to assist in developing infrastructure for the planned Aspen Commerce Park located within the City of Rock Hill.
The 246-acre tract is located off Heckle Boulevard and Celanese Road, approximately 3 miles off of Interstate 77. The infrastructure funding will be used for roads, providing electric service, water and sewer service to the site, and for stormwater management. All new infrastructure will be owned by the city.
“Aspen Park will provide the additional inventory needed to continue to attract new businesses and jobs,” said Rock Hill Mayor John Gettys. “The presence of a ‘pad-ready’ and/or speculative building will attract greater interest from business prospects considering the Charlotte market.”
According to economic development officials, York County and the City of Rock Hill need large industrial sites. Moreover, the city has an average of 17 prospect visits per month, with an average investment of $20 million.
“Part of Santee Cooper’s mission is to promote economic development across the state, and we have been successful in helping fund industrial sites in areas like Rock Hill,” said Pamela Williams, Santee Cooper senior vice president of corporate services. “This is an investment that will attract new businesses and yield good jobs for South Carolinians.”
Electric service is provided by the City of Rock Hill, whose municipally owned electric utility has served its 37,000 customers for 108 years. Its primary source of power is the Piedmont Municipal Power Agency, which receives a portion of its power needs from Santee Cooper.
