Santee Cooper partners with City of Georgetown to give free CFLs to electric customers

February 5, 2015

GEORGETOWN, SC – Santee Cooper and the City of Georgetown’s Electric Utility Department are teaming up to offer free energy-efficient compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs to Georgetown’s residential customers.

Customers can expect to receive a voucher for four free CFLs in the mail beginning this week. In order to receive the CFLs, customers must complete the voucher and take it to Georgetown City Hall located at 120 N. Fraser Street. Vouchers will not be accepted at the city’s electric department on Church Street. Bulbs are available while supplies last, and the deadline to receive free CFLs is Tuesday, March 31.

“Switching to energy-efficient lighting like CFL bulbs is one of the easiest and most effective ways to start saving energy and money at home,” said Alan J. Loveless, director of Georgetown’s electric department. “CFLs last longer and require less energy than incandescent bulbs. By placing them in your most-used light fixtures, you’ll be maximizing the bulbs’ efficiency.”

Santee Cooper provides wholesale electric service to Georgetown and donated the CFLs to the city’s electric department.

“We’ve been advocating CFL use since our ‘Switch and Save’ promotion distributed over 1 million free CFLs to our customers beginning in 2008, and it is our pleasure to help the City of Georgetown with this energy-saving initiative,” said Marc Tye, Santee Cooper’s senior vice president of customer service.

The City of Georgetown Electric Utility Department provides purchased power, distribution, metering, street and security lighting and other services to the citizens and businesses of Georgetown.

Wholesale power is purchased from Santee Cooper and the Southeastern Power Administration.
