SC BlueCross Recognizes Nursing Staff For Leading The Way To Better Health

May 6, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina employs nearly 600 nurses within its group of companies who work every day to support members in reaching their health goals, managing chronic and complex conditions and accessing quality care.

Blue Cross is recognizing and celebrating these front-line healthcare employees during National Nurses Week, May 6-12. The American Nurses Association has designated this week, which coincides with Florence Nightingale’s birthday on May 12, to honor nurses for their important role in the healthcare system (http://www.nursingworld.org/NNW).

“Our nurses do a tremendous amount to help members one-on-one, and they support providers in our network by following up between appointments to make sure members are getting the care they need and eliminating gaps and barriers,” said Mary Mazzola Spivey, senior vice president of managed care and population health.

“Chronic conditions cannot be managed by simply visiting the doctor a few times each year. Patients live with their conditions 24 hours a day, seven days a week, often administering nearly all of their care themselves. Our nursing staff serves as a great resource for our members. We congratulate them on a job well done,” said Mazzola Spivey, who also is a registered nurse.

At BlueCross and BlueChoice® HealthPlan, nurses provide personalized health coaching to members who have chronic conditions or complex health needs that require additional care coordination. These include back care, cholesterol management, maternity care, smoking cessation, stress management, weight management and more. Nurses also work for wholly-owned subsidiaries that serve Medicare, TRICARE, and other government clients.

In addition to providing care management, nurses also serve as managers, policymakers and innovators for quality improvement programs and new models in health care, and they often serve on nonprofit boards and volunteer for community-based health initiatives in South Carolina.
