SC State alumnus establishes scholarship in honor of former professor

Maurice Mosley, an alumnus of SC State University, was moved by the passing of his former professor and mentor, William “Bill” Heggins, who passed in November of 2016. Inspired by the life that Heggins lived, Mosley decided to donate $20,000 to SC State to establish the William J. Heggins II Scholarship fund.
Heggins, who was also a SC State alumnus, retired in 2005 after serving as a professor in the university’s School of Business for more than 40 years. Those who knew him know that he loved his alma mater dearly.
Mosley attributes his growth and success to Heggins.
He said, “I was a headstrong kid from Waterbury, Connecticut when I came to SC State. Professor Heggins took me under his wing and made me become a man. I am forever grateful for the guidance that he provided me and many others that came to SC State. This is the least I can do to show my gratitude.”
SC State’s School of Business recently recognized Mosley and the inaugural William J. Heggins II Scholarship recipients for the 2017-18 school year, during a homecoming luncheon in October.
This year’s scholarship recipients are Ariana Ruiz, a junior agribusiness major from Manning, South Carolina; Jasmine Pate, a junior management major from Bennettsville, South Carolina; Dajihnee Thompson, a sophomore management major from McClellanville, South Carolina; Carl Williams, a junior accounting major from Miami, Florida and Kehinde Biotidara, a junior accounting major from Lagos, Nigeria.
An accomplished professional, Mosley currently serves as a judge for the New Haven District Superior Courtin Connecticut. He was nominated by Governor Dannel Malloy and confirmed by the legislature on March 6, 2013.
Mosley was recognized as Citizen of the Law in 2016 by the Waterbury community for his inspiration and contributions to those in need. He was also acknowledged for exercising good will within the environment and society as a whole.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration from SC State University and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Connecticut.
Dr. Barbara Adams, interim dean of the School of Business, expressed appreciation for the generosity of alumni such as Mosley.
Adams said, “We strive to cultivate graduates such as, Judge Mosley. Not only has he excelled in his profession, but he is reaching back to help others.”
Scholarship applicants must be rising juniors or seniors, majoring in one of the areas in business with a 3.0 or higher GPA. Applications for the 2018-19 school year are currently available in the dean’s office, located in Room 106 of Belcher Hall.
