School supply drive hosted by United Way of the Piedmont supports over 1,000 students in Spartanburg County
August 2, 2023Twenty percent of school-age children in the Spartanburg County community live in poverty. For these students and their families, a back to school supply list can be a large purchase, causing the parents to decide between putting food on the table and sending their child to school without those supplies. United Way of the Piedmont, in partnership with Duke Energy, held its annual Stuff the Bus school supply drive to provide needed supplies to all seven Spartanburg County School Districts.
Local businesses and community members collected $33,400 in supplies that will help over 1,200 students in our community. Additionally, over 50 volunteers from the community spent multiple days sorting the school supplies and stuffing backpacks so that the schools can easily give a child a fully stuffed backpack with everything they need. Extra loose supplies were also made available to teachers to help supply their classrooms.
Donations and school supplies given to United Way of the Piedmont help students show up ready to learn and succeed, while supporting families who are struggling to make ends meet. Through projects like Stuff the Bus, United Way of the Piedmont and their partners are helping more families reach self-sufficiency so that everyone in the community has the opportunity to thrive.
United Way’s next community project will be its Fall Food Drive in October. If interested in corporate sponsorship or starting an employee giving program at your workplace, contact Alex Moore at: [email protected] for more information.
