Shutt honored as a Lawyer of Year for the Columbia area

August 22, 2022

Nekki Shutt, a founding member of Burnette Shutt & McDaniel, has been named “Best Lawyers in America’s” 2023 Lawyer of the Year in the practice area of Employee Benefits (ERISA) for the Columbia area.

Shutt, who has been honored in “Best Lawyers” every year since 2010, also earned eight additional honors in the latest edition of the annual guide to the nation’s top lawyers.

“Working with Nekki, we see on a daily basis what an outstanding attorney she is,” firm co-founder Malissa Burnette said. “We’re thrilled that our colleagues in Columbia also recognize her incredible skill and determination.”

Most of the practice areas Shutt is recognized in are related to employee benefits and employment law. She also is honored again this year for her work in commercial litigation, personal injury litigation and qui tam whistleblower law. “This truly speaks to the well-rounded nature of her practice,” firm co-founder Kathleen McDaniel added. “She does so many things so very well. It’s great to see that versatility honored.”

A certified specialist in employment law for more than a decade, Shutt’s employee benefits practice includes federal issues under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act. This includes long- and short-term disability, life insurance and more. She also represents clients in federal cases involving COBRA and South Carolina healthcare insurance continuation laws.

A peer-reviewed guide to the legal profession with a 40-year history, “Best Lawyers in America” selects honorees based on independent research and surveys from attorneys in the same geographic area and same practice area. The individual with the highest overall peer feedback in each practice area and each area receives Lawyer of the Year honors.
