Shutt part of 14th Amendment panel at April symposium

Burnette Shutt & McDaniel co-founder Nekki Shutt will join state and national historians and legal scholars this month at a symposium on the Fourteenth Amendment.
The two-day event, “Reconstruction’s Legacy: The History and Contemporary Significance of the Fourteenth Amendment” caps a commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Reconstruction. Historic Columbia and the University of South Carolina and Historic Columbia organized the series.
The program begins April 19 with an address from Harvard Law School Professor Randall Kennedy. A Columbia native, he’s a prominent legal scholar whose research focuses on racial conflict and legal institutions.
The next day includes discussions of the Fourteenth Amendment’s historic and contemporary significance. Shutt, co-counsel in a landmark 14th Amendment case in South Carolina, will join two other attorneys on the latter panel.
The Fourteenth Amendment was among the three Reconstruction Amendments. Its goal was granting citizenship to former slaves, but its guarantee of equal protection under the law has made it one of the most litigated parts of the Constitution.
Shutt and firm co-founder M. Malissa Burnette were lead attorneys in the federal lawsuit that paved the way for marriage-equality in South Carolina, a case that fell under the Fourteenth Amendment.
All events will be at the South Carolina State Museum. Kennedy’s Thursday speech is free. Registration for Friday events remains open.
