Simple Steps to Regain Your Focus at Work
August 16, 2016By Brian Maynor
School is starting back and summer vacations are ending, which means it’s time to buckle down and regain focus at the office.
Summers are slow and relaxed in most offices because people are in and out and with one hundred degree days, it’s just too hot to do much of anything. While no one likes to come back to work after a vacation, it is that time of year and students aren’t the only ones that have to settle down and get back into a routine.
Fortunately there are a few things you can do to ease yourself back into a work mindset that are fairly simple and easy. Plus they will make a great habit to help you throughout the year. Here are some of the most popular and effective:
1. Start with a list. It’s hard to know where to start when you don’t have a clear vision of what all you need to get done. By taking a few minutes to create a to-do list you not only inventory your tasks, you can set the priority for how to accomplish them. Plus there is just something satisfying about crossing off a completed task. It fills us with a sense of accomplishment and motivates us to cross off more.
2. Stay organized. A natural partner to the to-do list, organizing your desk as well as your files will help you feel more in control and make it easier to compartmentalize them based on need. This is true even if all of your files are computer files. Creating folders and even choosing the file name can help you find documents later, saving time and stress.
3. Make time for yourself. Whether this is getting out of the office for lunch with a friend, or going for a mid-afternoon coffee break or manicure making time for yourself that isn’t related to work will keep you from feeling buried. Exercise is another great way to not only create some personal time, but also do a lot of good for your mind and body.
4. Enroll in a class. Having something to look forward to is important to maintain focus and momentum, plus learning a new skill or updating your current ones looks great on your resume; boost your confidence and will help propel you forward in your career.
Getting back into the daily grind may not be fun, but it doesn’t have to be stressful or overwhelming. A few simple steps will not only help keep your head above water but your spirits up as well.
