May 7, 2017

Karen Monahan has joined the South Carolina Aquarium as the Director of Marketing.  She will be integral in launching a marketing campaign for the new Zucker Family Sea Turtle Recovery as well as sharing the Aquarium’s critically important conservation work.

Monahan comes to the Aquarium with more than 15 years of experience in the advertising and marketing industry.  She has led teams in research and strategy through creative and production. She received her master’s degree in design and technology and BFA in fine art from Parsons School of Design, New School University.

Monahan brings a strong background in digital media, advertising and content marketing to the organization, including senior leadership roles at McCann Worldgroup, Momentum Worldwide, and Wieden and Kennedy in New York City. After relocating to Charleston, she served as Director of Strategic Communications at Darkness to Light, responsible for its national brand and digital engagement.

“Karen’s expertise in digital media and talent for storytelling will help the Aquarium connect people with wildlife and wild places,” said Kevin Mills, Aquarium President and CEO.  “Her passion for sea turtles is contagious and with the opening of Zucker Family Sea Turtle Recovery, her arrival is perfect timing.”

With a passion for wildlife conservation, each year Monahan spends time volunteering with non-profit organizations all over the globe, working hands on in the rescue, rehabilitation and reintroduction of sick, injured and endangered animals, including work with the critically endangered leatherback sea turtle. Her love for the natural world echoes the mission of the South Carolina Aquarium.

“I am thrilled to join the team at the South Carolina Aquarium and to be able to leverage my skills and expertise in sharing the organization’s amazing work, said Monahan. “It is a dream come true to be able to share the stories of the staff, volunteers and the especially the animals in our care.”
