South Carolina Virtual Charter School highlights 2024 graduates at commencement ceremony

June 12, 2024

South Carolina Virtual Charter School (SCVCS), a COGNIA and NCAA-accredited, full-time free online public charter school, honored its class of 2024 during an in-person graduation ceremony on May 30 at the Koger Center in Columbia.

The graduation celebrated the achievements of more than 280 students throughout South Carolina who completed their high school course credits in an online setting. Commencement speakers included SCVCS’ valedictorian, Paige Owings of Simpsonville, S.C., and its salutatorian, Sophie Laffidy of Hartsville, S.C.

Collectively, SCVCS’ class of 2024 boasts acceptances to state technical schools, colleges, and universities across the country. Scholarship offers for the current senior class total over $3 million. “We are so proud of our graduating class and know they have the tools they need to succeed in college, the workforce and beyond,” said Anita Latham, SCVCS Head of School.

Students enroll in SCVCS for myriad reasons. “Some are looking to escape the external pressures of in-person learning, some may have fallen off track academically, and others are seeking an alternative to the traditional brick-and-mortar school setting,” said Latham.

SCVCS students access a robust online curriculum in the core subjects of math, science, English language arts, and history. In addition to these core subjects, students participate in a host of electives and attend daily, live virtual classes taught in real time by state-licensed teachers. Many SCVCS seniors are enrolled in dual credit college classes, giving them a jump start on their post-secondary goals.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate the achievements of our 2024 graduates alongside our stellar faculty and the entire school community,” said Latham.
