Summerville Medical Center Opens State’s First Dedicated OB Hospitalist Program

July 25, 2012

SUMMERVILLE, SC – July 25, 2012 – Summerville Medical Center (SMC) has introduced its new OB/GYN Hospitalist Program, which provides 24/7 obstetrics and gynecology onsite coverage at the hospital. SMC is the first hospital in the state to offer a program with a dedicated OB/GYN hospitalist team. Hospitalists are physicians that work inside the hospital and care for admitted patients.

Summerville Medical Center, a campus of Trident Health, is partnering with Ob Hospitalist Group (OBHG), based in Greenville, SC, to provide this dedicated service. All obstetricians and gynecologists participating in the program are board certified, and have received additional training in advanced fetal monitoring, risk management and operative delivery.

The OB/GYN Hospitalists at Summerville Medical Center are:  Susie Wilson, MD; Tawanna Gilliard, MD; Melissa Pearce, MD; Greg Miller, MD; and Ann Gorman, MD.

If for some reason a patient’s personal physician is not available, or if the patient does not have a physician, the OB/GYN hospitalist will evaluate the progress of the patient’s labor to provide a safe, healthy delivery, or will assess her gynecologic condition as appropriate. OB/GYN hospitalists are active members of the Summerville Medical Center medical staff and communicate directly with key medical personnel in the hospital, including medical and surgical consultants, discharge planners, social workers, clergy, and others. This communication is essential to ensure a positive, safe and comfortable experience throughout the patient’s delivery process. This new service will give patients quicker access to individual care, in the event their personal physician is not available or if they do not have a personal physician. Trident Medical Center will be launching this new program in early August. Available
