Summerville Orchestra kicks off its new season “A Platinum Jubilee”

August 1, 2023

The Summerville Orchestra (S.O.) celebrates its 20th season this year with an All-Star lineup of both well-loved classics and contemporary works. The concerts’ focus is celebration, in keeping with its Platinum Jubilee. Music Director Wojciech Milewski explains, “Each concert is completely unique and a celebration of different instruments and musicians. I’m excited for Summerville audiences to experience these performances!”

The fall 2023 season begins in September with a celebration of two major composers in the classical music world, Edvard Grieg and George Gershwin. The orchestra will be performing Grieg’s “Piano Concerto No. 1 in A minor,” featuring acclaimed classical pianist Phillip Bush and Gershwin’s “American in Paris.” The sponsors of this concert are two of the S.O.’s musicians who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. The focus of November’s concert is fairy tales, folklore, and the interwoven fabric of stories and music. The orchestra will perform the Overture to Hansel and Gretel, the Suite from the movie “Coco,” and the winner of the S.O.’s concerto competition.

In February 2024, the full orchestra and choir will perform large-scale works, including the Suite from the Disney movie “Aladdin” and Sibelius’s “Finlandia.” April will feature waltzes from Die Fledermaus and the techno groove of Mason Bates’s “Mothership.”

The S.O. will commemorate its season finale in May with the world premiere of a work by Chris Pilsner commissioned for the orchestra in celebration of Summerville. The concert will also feature Mozart’s 1791 “Overture to the Magic Flute.” The Summerville Orchestra’s 20th season is not to be missed!
