Mayor’s Walk against Domestic Violence is first along Vista Greenway Extension

The 2017 Mayor’s Walk against Domestic Violence on Saturday, October 7, will be the first walk along the City of Columbia’s Vista Greenway Extension in Finlay Park. The Vista Greenway Extension begins on the Taylor Street side of the park and travels under Lincoln Street and features a 100-year-old railroad tunnel. This vibrant and critical rail-trail links pedestrians and cyclists between residential neighborhoods, Finlay Park and the Vista. The Vista Greenway Extension was opened on July 13, 2016.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and for the 11th year, Columbia City Mayor Steve Benjamin and Mayor Pro Tem Tameika Isaac Devine will raise awareness of the abuse and violence that is taking place in our community. The walk features an Information Fair at 8 a.m. The Purple Rally begins at 9 a.m. and the walk steps off at 10 a.m. https://2017mayorswalkagainstdomesticviolence.eventbrite.com.

City Community Development to Host Homebuyer Workshop

The City of Columbia Community Development Department will host a Homebuyer Workshop on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at Earlewood Park, located at 1111 Parkside Dr., from 9 AM – 1 PM.

The Homebuyer Workshop is a 4 hour session. During the workshop participants will gain knowledge about the home buying process, and how to develop the skills needed to tackle money management, barriers to credit, and getting a mortgage loan.

A certificate will be given to each participant for completing the 4 hour session and a drawing will be held for a participant to win an Amazon Fire Tablet. Light refreshments will be served.

Halloween Adoption Special

The Columbia and Lexington Animal Services will be hosting a Halloween Adoption Special. The adoption fees will be reduced to $31. All adoption fees include spay/neuter, microchip, Feline Leukemia/Heartworm Test, initial vaccines and deworming

The Board of Zoning Appeals meeting will take place on October 10, 2017, at 10 a.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.

The Design and Development Review Commission meeting will take place on October 12, 2017, at 4 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.

Planning Commission

The Planning Commission meeting will take place on October 2, 2017, at 5:15 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.

Please join the City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department for a grand opening ceremony for the new Columbia Art Center on Saturday, October 28 at 9:30 a.m.

The new 5,000-square-foot center, located in the Cannon Garage, includes classroom space, a glaze room, clay room, office space and gallery.

The event will feature a ribbon cutting followed by an open house that will include art demos, tours of the new facility and light refreshments.

The Columbia Art Center is located at 1227 Taylor St., Ste. C, Columbia, SC 29201 (Cannon Garage).
