The COMET announces route changes in the Forest Drive Corridor

January 12, 2018

The COMET announces major route changes in the Forest Drive Corridor.  The current Route 15: Forest Drive will become Route 701.  This routes serves as a main connection artery that originates from the transit center on the corner of Sumter and Laurel streets and follows Taylor and Forest to the new connection protection zone located on Little Road around the Walmart on Forest Drive.  The Connection Protection Zone will serve as a mini-transit hub which will provide a guaranteed transfer to feeder routes originating from it.  Those routes includes:

  • Route 75: Decker/Parklane
  • Route 76: Fort Jackson
  • Route 77: Polo Rd.

This design helps to eliminate the need to travel to the transit center to transfer to other routes in that area.  It also makes it easier to serve efficiently communities in and near Ft. Jackson.  Safety was the primary concern when designing the connection protection zone.  The COMET Planning Manager states that, “The situation with passengers running across Forest Drive to the stop on the north side of the street is untenable. This change gets customers closer to the stores they are using like Walmart and promotes safety.”  In addition to the Forest Drive Corridor, there is a minor change to Route 46: Lower Richland Blvd that adds service to parts of Atlas Road and Greenlawn Drive.
