The Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission receives a generous land donation

Mungo Family has generously donated 118.4 acres of land
Columbia, S.C. – The Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission (ICRC) announced today that the Mungo Family has generously donated 118.4 acres of land. At a special call-in meeting held on Tuesday, December 19, 2017, the Commission voted to accept the donation of property with the intent of adding additional trails and greenspace. Most will recognize the property as the former Rawls Creek Golf Course, approximately one mile south of Irmo, SC and just off of Lake Murray Blvd.
According to Stewart Mungo, “My father originally built Coldstream Country Club as an amenity to attract new families to a growing area. It once included a French restaurant, a casual grill, and a spectacular ballroom. Today, we are coming full circle by purchasing and donating this same property to create greenspace and trails that will complement Saluda Shoals Park and thereby attract a new generation of young families who will want to enjoy the amenities of this same space.”
Grateful for this tremendous act of generosity, Mark A. Smyers, ICRC Executive Director, said, “It has been wonderful working with the Mungo Family on this project. I am extremely impressed with their generosity and willingness to invest in uplifting this community. This land will be a great addition to our park system and will provide more greenspace and trails for our community to enjoy, which was established as a facility priority in our Strategic Master Plan.”
The former public golf course is bordered by several neighborhoods including Amberly, Brittany, Brittany II, Brittany Place, Coldstream, First Colony, The Fairways, and Woodgreene. The property will remain closed to the public for assessment and maintenance, and ICRC hopes to set an official opening date soon.
