The power of 3

Have you ever wondered why we do things in threes?

We count to three.  Some of the most beloved stories center around threes like The Three Little Pigs, The Three Little Bears, and even as adults we get swept up in love triangles.

It’s not a coincidence at all.  In fact, it’s called the Rule of 3, and it is a principle that has been used in writing and presenting for years.  Exceptional orators like Martin Luther King Jr. and Steve Jobs used the Rule of 3 in almost all of their engagements, but it also translates into other aspects of life like the 3 Rules of Survival.

Quite simply the Rule of 3 is powerful.  We tend to remember information better when presented in threes because it is seen as simple and catchy, plus it makes the presenter come across as knowledgeable yet relatable.  Audiences react to the Rule of 3 even if they don’t realize it.

Here are a few other insights into the Rule of 3 and how you can use it in practically any aspect of life:

1.   In explanations.  Concepts and ideas can be difficult to grasp, but we can make that worse if we over-explain it.  Instead of getting bogged down by the minutia or compound the problem with too many examples choose three instead.  You can find that you actually can cover more ground and streamline understanding that way.

2.    In persuasion.  It can be a challenge to communicate persuasively, especially when we’re faced with resistance.  The next time we need to do a little convincing, use the Rule of 3.  Just like explanations, give three reasons why your position is the best approach and let the power of three do its work.

3.    In decision making.  We all want to make better decisions, so the next time we have to consider three options. With one option there is no comparison at all, yet with two options we have only a direct comparison, which doesn’t provide the best objectivity.  However, having three options give us a sense of breadth and perspective without overwhelming us with choices.

A list of three things is both intriguing and a lot easier to remember than say a list of five or more things.  Plus, our minds are satisfied with the options presented without being overwhelmed.  Keep your eyes open over the next week and see just how many times the number 3 pops up in your life.  You might be surprised.
