Three District Five schools named to SC School Improvement Council’s 2018 Honor Roll

Three School Improvement Councils (SICs) representing Lexington-Richland School District Five have been named to the South Carolina School Improvement Council’s (SC-SIC) 2018 Honor Roll for their “significant efforts to foster civic engagement in public education.”

The SICs making the list are Chapin Intermediate, Irmo Elementary and Spring Hill High.

For Chapin Intermediate School, this year’s designation marks the second consecutive year the District Five school has been named to the SC-SIC Honor Roll. Principal Vann Holden said he continues to be amazed by the SIC’s work.

Irmo Elementary SIC chair Jennifer Baker was all smiles when hearing the news of being named.

“This is such a special recognition for Irmo Elementary School,” Baker said. “There were 19 SICs out of over 1,200 selected for the Honor Roll and for the SC-SIC to notice our hard work and efforts means so much. This is about our students and how we can connect with our community to support our school.”

Spring Hill High principal Dr. Michael Lofton stressed the importance of the role the school’s SIC plays each day saying, “There are so many moving parts to making a school run from day to day, and the School Improvement Council is so critical for us. Our parents and community take time out of their busy schedules constantly to ensure that Spring Hill High School is the best it can be, and they are always searching for ways on how it can be even better!”

Five finalists from this year’s list of Honor Roll SICs will be selected in February, with one to be announced as the winner of the annual Riley Award for SIC Excellence in April.

“The value of South Carolina’s School Improvement Councils cannot be emphasized enough,” said Tom Hudson, SC-SIC Executive Director. “When parents, community members, educators and students come together to address school needs, establish goals, and undertake meaningful activities to meet them, everyone benefits. We are very proud of what this year’s Honor Roll SICs have accomplished for their schools.”
