Three Mashburn projects receive Historic Preservation Award

May 7, 2019

On Wednesday, May 1st, Mashburn Construction celebrated three of their recent projects being recognized at the 2019 Preservation Awards hosted by Historic Columbia. The Marks Building, Hotel Trundle/Boudreaux Group, and Columbia SC Visitors Center are three of the nine to receive an award in two of the three areas of recognition.

Each May, in conjunction with National Preservation Month, Historic Columbia presents these awards to celebrate the accomplishments of local property owners; professionals in the fields of architecture, construction and design; and leaders who champion preservation as an opportunity to support the Midlands’ economy and culture. Hotel Trundle and Marks Building were honored in the “Adaptive Use” category and the Columbia SC Visitors Center was recognized in the “New Construction in a Historic Context” category.

In January 2018, Mashburn completed the historic renovation of The Marks (and Robinson) Buildings located at 1625 Main Street. The multi-level building had various components of restoration and preservation to maintain its character for its future modern, more practical multi-use purposes. Mashburn completed Hotel Trundle, also known as Powell, Western Auto and Rose Talbert buildings (1519 Sumter Street; 1222 and 1224 Taylor Street) in April 2018. This unique project encompassed upfits for two tenants with various challenges coming from a blighted, historic building. Shortly thereafter in June of 2018, the upfit for Columbia SC Visitors Center was completed at the busy intersection of Gervais and Lincoln Streets which is now a high-trafficked, but easily accessible stop for tourists and residents to learn about Columbia.

“Since 1976 we have been restoring and preserving buildings in downtown communities. We are honored to have our team and partners recognized for their commitment and contribution to the enhancing historic value in Columbia,” says President, Lee Mashburn.

Mashburn Construction continues to thrive in renovation projects of historic nature among other areas of expertise. The firm continues to focus on “building better communities” as part of their company-wide vision.
