Turning Pages SC marks 55 years of empowering minds through literacy with milestone birthday bash

August 7, 2023

Turning Pages SC, known as the Greater Columbia Literacy Council from 1968 to 2007, is excited to announce its momentous 55th birthday bash, “Dive into a Literary Feast.” The celebration will take place at River’s Edge Retreat on August 26, from 4 pm to 8 pm, as the organization commemorates over five decades of empowering adults through the transformative power of reading.

Over the decades, Turning Pages SC has made an indelible impact on the community, with more than 1,700 dedicated tutors having provided personalized, one-on-one tutoring to more than 6,000 learners. The organization’s unwavering commitment to literacy remains crucial, especially in South Carolina, where many adult learners come to Turning Pages SC reading below a 3rd grade level. The need for literacy services in our state has never been more evident.

At the “Dive into a Literary Feast” fundraising event, guests will enjoy a poolside BBQ, savoring an entree, two sides, and a refreshing drink. Of course, the celebration wouldn’t be complete without a special birthday cake. But the icing on the cake will be the chance to meet with 20 esteemed South Carolina authors participating in the annual “Authors for Literacy” gathering there at the event.

Turning Pages SC reflects on its resilient journey with deep gratitude to its many tutors, board members, supporters, and community friends who have contributed so much time building up to this momentous milestone in literacy. “The impact of literacy is immeasurable, and our volunteers have been the driving force behind changing lives through reading,” says Emily Davison, Chair of the Community Engagement Subcommittee.

In addition to current friends, this event welcomes and encourages anyone who was connected to the Greater Columbia Literacy Council from 1968 to 2007 to also join in. They would love to celebrate this significant occasion with you!

More information and tickets for this memorable occasion are available at turningpagessc.org/birthday. The organization warmly invites the community to join in celebrating this meaningful journey of shaping a brighter future through literacy. All funds raised will directly support their literacy programs in 2024.
