University’s Walker Institute to Launch Lecture Series on Future of U.S. Foreign policy Sept. 25

COLUMBIA, SC – September 23, 2008 – The University of South Carolina’s Walker Institute for International and Area Studies will launch a public lecture series on the future of U.S. foreign policy Sept. 25.

Mike Scheuer, best-selling author and former head of the CIA’s Bin Laden Unit, will speak at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, in Lumpkin Auditorium, located on the eighth floor of the Moore School of Business. Scheuer’s lecture, titled “U.S. Foreign Policy and the Next Administration,” is free.

Scheuer resigned from the CIA in November 2004 with nearly 20 years of experience in covert action and national security related to Afghanistan, South Asia and the Middle East. His new book is “Marching Toward Hell: America and Islam after Iraq.” He also wrote “Imperial Hubris: Why the West is Losing the War on Terrorism” (2004) and “Through Our Enemies’ Eyes: Osama bin Laden, Radical Islam, and the Future of America” (2002). He is a frequent commentator for national broadcast media on U.S. foreign policy and national security.

■          2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12– “The United States, Pivotal Powers and the New Global Reality,” featuring Nina Hachigian, senior vice president of the Center for American Progress and former senior political analyst at the Rand Corp.

■          3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9 – “Foreign Affairs Priorities for the Future,” featuring George Staples, former U.S. ambassador to Rwanda and career diplomat with the U.S. State Department.
