On Monday, August 26, the University of South Carolina hosted the official launch and unveiling of the international edition of the Encyclopedia of Hinduism. The occasion marked the first time that Hindu culture, one of the world’s oldest living traditions, has been documented in one, authoritative publication, the result of contributions made by nearly 1,000 scholars, including ones at USC.
Hundreds of scholars, students and Hindu families were at the university for a daylong conference that centered around the 11-volume encyclopedia and the richness and diversity of Indian culture that binds more than 1 billion people worldwide.
At the event, the university also announced CarolIndia, a celebration of India through a series of fall and spring events for the community and campus.
The news conference featured USC President Harris Pastides; Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati, president of Divine Shakti Foundation and managing editor of the encyclopedia; and Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji, founder of the India Heritage Research Foundation.
