Wings Across South Carolina Bioblitz
March 28, 2016Special Event to Celebrate Birds at Congaree National Park
As the days grow longer and the subtle hues of winter give way to the vibrant green of spring, Congaree National Park staff are feverishly preparing for a special event in May which will showcase all things birds!
Wings Across South Carolina – a Bioblitz will take place on Friday, May 20 and Saturday May 21. Bioblitz is a nationwide effort to engage visitors and youth with citizen science and education in their parks. As a regional showcase for Bioblitz, National Park Service and State Park Service sites in South Carolina are working together to make it a statewide event, and a weekend to remember.
The event at Congaree National Park will feature exhibits, hands on activities for kids, special programs, and the opportunity to work with scientists to identify birds and collect data. All of the data collected at Congaree National Park will be included as part of nationwide Bioblitz activities.
“We are excited to provide this opportunity for visitors to discover their national park and the amazing variety of birds that can be found here,” says Chief of Resource Management Liz Struhar, “Friday will be geared toward students who will be participating in a variety of activities and actually collecting data. Both days will be open to the general public and we encourage everyone to attend!”
There will be no charge to attend the event.
Struhar goes on to remind everyone that there are opportunities to volunteer as part of the Bioblitz team at the park: “We’ve assembled an incredible team of volunteers who will be assisting in a number of ways. This event is really going to be a community effort and a lot of fun!”
