Workforce Pathways Scholarship funding available for short-term job training in high demand career fields

Greenville Technical College’s division of Economic Development and Corporate Training (EDCT) is offering a limited-time scholarship for eligible individuals seeking short-term job training for high-demand employment areas.
The Workforce Pathways Scholarship (WPS), funded by the S.C. General Assembly, covers the cost of class tuition and textbooks for eligible GTC continuing education courses in the areas of Advanced Manufacturing, Logistics and Skilled Trades, Health Care and Environmental Safety, Quality Management, and Real Estate.
These short-term job training programs, many of which are part of the college’s Quick Jobs with a Future program, will prepare students for career fields including medical coding, phlebotomy, property management, human resources, mechatronics, welding, and advanced manufacturing.

“The Workforce Pathways funds provided by the state are geared toward providing training opportunities that will make participants more employable in a short time frame,” said Dr. Jermaine Whirl, vice president for Economic Development & Corporate Training. “The programs offered are aligned with high need occupations within the Greenville community, and students will be able to utilize their newly acquired skills, immediately upon completing their program of study.”
“Overall, we plan to use these funds to enhance the workforce in Greenville County to ensure our current companies stay competitive in this global marketplace while attracting prospective companies to Greenville in the future,” he added.
The scholarship is available for courses that begin prior to June 15, 2017, until funds are expended. Students are limited to one program of study and are responsible for paying for any additional costs beyond the amount awarded through WPS. The scholarship program is only available for this limited time period and on a first-come, first-serve basis.
To be eligible, applicants must be at least 18 years old, be able to successfully meet program or course pre-requisites and requirements, and present a negative drug screen document at time of registration. Applicants are also required to attend a WPS Information Session that reviews scholarship guidelines, application forms, a complete list of eligible courses and other program information. Day and evening information sessions are offered Tuesdays from Jan. 31 to Feb. 28 in the Buck Mickel Center, located at 216 S. Pleasantburg Dr.
