CommUniversity connects Lander students with Lakelands community

Lander University was visited by 53 companies, agencies and organizations for the annual CommUniversity event on Wednesday.

CommUniversity gives students a glimpse of many of the resources and opportunities available to them outside of Lander’s campus.

“Why wouldn’t we want to be at Lander,” quipped Henry O’Leary, recruiting manager for Spinx. “All kidding aide, it’s a chance to connect with the students.”

He said Spinx promotes from within, so the chance to speak with students about their tuition reimbursement programs and other incentives provides Spinx with great job candidates and students with resume-building jobs that pay them for good grades.

Rev. Alvin Green was at CommUniversity offering students a place to worship. Green is the interim pastor at Mount Moriah Baptist Church and said the church attended the event to do some outreach and invite students who could come.

“I think we have a very good church to come to and they would enjoy the experience,” he said of students.

Dominic Mellette, chief pharmacy officer for Carolina Health Centers, said their health center serves anyone, regardless of their ability to pay, so they wanted to get that message out to students. Carolina Health Centers also provided free Narcan, which is used to reverse an opioid overdose, and fentanyl test strips, as well as first aid kits and other health care items.
