Laurens Electric Chapter of WIRE: Continuing a Legacy of Community Impact

September 4, 2024

The Laurens Electric chapter of Women Involved in Rural Electrification (WIRE) is entering an exciting new chapter in its history, continuing its legacy of impactful community service. Established in 1981 through the Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, Inc., WIRE operates under the motto “People Helping People,” dedicating its efforts to aiding victims of natural disasters, supporting homeless shelters and children’s homes, and contributing to programs like Habitat for Humanity and the Palmetto Project.

The Laurens Electric chapter of WIRE has long been an integral part of the local community, with notable initiatives including an annual Christmas Angel Tree, which provides gifts to children from families in need each holiday season. Additionally, the chapter collaborates with the United Way to deliver Bags of Love to area seniors on Valentine’s Day, among other activities.

As the Laurens chapter moves into a new era, a significant transition is underway. After eleven years with WIRE and seven years as its President, Sherri Davenport is passing the leadership baton to Jeny Landrith. Davenport will remain active with WIRE in the Key Holder position, ensuring continuity and support for the chapter’s efforts.

This leadership change signifies the reactivation of the Laurens chapter following the challenges posed by COVID-19. Davenport reflects on her tenure with optimism, noting, “I think I have helped to assemble a nice group of women, and we’re going to be able to toss around ideas and get creative.” Incoming President Jeny Landrith shares this enthusiasm, emphasizing her commitment to building upon Davenport’s achievements while incorporating modern elements like social media to enhance the chapter’s outreach and impact.

Landrith’s approach is to maintain the core values and successful traditions of WIRE while adapting to new circumstances. “I want to be able to keep what Sherri has done and still be able to add new things and grow the chapter,” she says. Plans for the coming year include potential fundraising events such as bingo nights and ongoing projects like the Bags of Love initiative.

For those interested in contributing to or getting involved with the Laurens chapter of WIRE, there are several ways to participate.
