Local nonprofit Rebuilding Together Spartanburg, first national affiliate in South Carolina

September 18, 2024

Rebuilding Together Spartanburg launched this month as the first affiliate in South Carolina’s history to join the National Organization Rebuilding Together which hosts over 110 affiliates across the United States.

Formerly Christmas in Action, a nonprofit established in 1997 by local residents Cindy and John Barrett in their desire to help Spartanburg County homeowners who needed critical health and safety-related home repairs, the organization has completed home repairs on over 900 homes, allowing the homeowners to remain in their homes in a safe and secure environment.

The City of Spartanburg Mayor Pro-Tem, Councilwoman Janie Salley, presented a proclamation citing September 12 as Rebuilding Together Spartanburg Day as the organization honored partners and staff during its relaunch event on Sept. 12.

“From the beginning, Christmas in Action has relied heavily on volunteer groups from churches, businesses, civic groups and educational institutions to complete the home repairs,” commented Deb Kladivko, Executive Director. “The need is only growing in Spartanburg County with more than 42,000 community members living in homes experiencing disrepair. We work with partners from the City and County to ensure we can help address health and safety-related home repairs and restore dignity. As Rebuilding Together Spartanburg, we hope to increase our impact on the community while supporting the national mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities, rebuilding lives.”
