Salvation Army summer camper, Kiara McElveen-Lowery (age 8) will receive the Walter E. Hayden Star Camper Award on Tuesday, September 17. This award is given annually to a camper in recognition of exemplary spirit of cooperation, dependability, respect, and generosity while at Camp Walter Johnson. When asked about her experience at camp, Kiara replied enthusiastically, “I liked the swimming pool, sleeping on the top bunk and making new friends. I want to thank everyone for sending me and so many children to camp!”

The Salvation Army of the Midlands provided a summer camping experience to 141 local children at Camp Walter Johnson in Denton, North Carolina. In addition, the Salvation Army also provided a summer Day Camp program for 32 local children (ages 6-12) here in Columbia.

Camp Walter Johnson provides a positive environment for children to grow, learn and be encouraged while striving to meet spiritual, social, recreational and educational needs. Since 1974, Camp Walter Johnson has impacted the lives of over 55,000 children throughout North and South Carolina.

Children also took part in a Day Camp summer experience here in Columbia. Day Camp ran for five weeks from June 10 through July 12. Campers were able to enjoy fun and educational activities, field trips and a nutritious breakfast and lunch meal each day.

Families paid low registration fees for both Camp Walter Johnson and Columbia Day Camp. Generous donations and community support made it possible for The Salvation Army to make the summer camping season affordable for low income/working parents.
