First woman among three engineers to receive highest college honor

Atlanta attorney Janine Anthony Bowen is the first woman to receive the highest honor bestowed by Clemson University’s College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences.
Bowen was among three engineering alumni inducted into the Thomas Green Clemson Academy of Engineers and Scientists in a ceremony Thursday night at the Madren Conference Center.
Also on Thursday night, the college honored three alumni with the Outstanding Young Alumnus award. This year’s awardees are Brent Beason, president of B & W Fiberglass; Tony Elliott, co-offensive coordinator of the national champion Clemson Tigers football team; and Jeff DiMaio, chief operating officer of Tetramer Technologies.

Mitch Norville of Greenville and Bob Hambright of Blowing Rock, North Carolina, joined Bowen in the honor. Fewer than 0.2 percent of the college’s alumni are in the academy.
Those in attendance included the honorees’ families; Clemson President James P. Clements; his wife, Beth Clements; and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Robert Jones.
It was the fourth crop of inductees that Anand Gramopadhye has welcomed to the academy since he became dean of the college in July 2013.
“All of our honorees are leaving their mark in their own unique way,” he said. “A simple Gandhian philosophy succinctly captures the spirit of how each one of them has conducted themselves: ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world.’ I congratulate each one on a well-deserved honor.”
Bowen is technology practice leader and shareholder with LeClair Ryan, PC. Hambright retired in 2010 as an executive of Balfour Beatty Construction. Norville is owner of Atlantic South Development Inc.
