Two Greenville B-Cycle Stations to Relocate

Caine Halter Family YMCA and Fluor Field new sites for bikeshare stations

GREENVILLE, SC – Greenville B-cycle will soon relocate two of its existing eight bike stations. Stations are being relocated from the corner of Rhett and River Streets and the Sterling Community Center to Fluor Field and the Caine Halter YMCA.

“We are excited about the new B-cycle station locations. Residents have long requested a station at Fluor Field, and we are confident the station at Caine Halter YMCA will serve as a wonderful community asset,” said Greenville B-cycle Program Director Lisa Hallo. “Rhett and River is a very popular station so we hope to work with Grubb Properties, which is developing the planned apartment complex at that site, to install another station there once construction is complete.”

According to Sterling Community Center Manager Sylvia Vandross, there is likely a better alternative to encourage bicycling among Sterling residents than the current bike station. “The station has been in place now for almost two years and usage has been little to none.” Adds Hallo, “We have been working closely with the Sterling Community Center to determine a more practical alternative that will better suit the needs and desires of the community. Our goal is to ensure that B-cycle stations are actively used and serve as community resources.”

According to YMCA District Executive Director Lee Keels. “With our close proximity to the Swamp Rabbit Trail and focus on community health and wellness, a station at the Caine Halter Family YMCA is a great fit.” Greenville Drive Owner Craig Brown agrees. “We believe that the bike share program is a significant amenity for Greenville residents and visitors and is consistent with the mission of Fluor Field and the Greenville Drive and the experience we strive to provide for our customers and guests.  We are very pleased there will soon be a bike station near Fluor Field.”

A partnership of local conservation group Upstate Forever and Greenville Health System (GHS), Greenville B-cycle serves as a convenient means for active transportation around town. “B-cycle members have logged more than 5,500 rides to date,” says GHS Community Relations Coordinator Rebecca Cooper. “Greenville Health System is thrilled to see the program’s growing impact on the community. We anticipate seeing even more people out on B-cycles as a result of the station relocations.”

As has been the case with several installations in the past, the City of Greenville is once again serving as a critical partner in the relocation effort. According to City of Greenville Parks and Recreation Director Dana Souza, “We are happy to assist the B-cycle program as staff time and resources allow. The program provides recreational benefits to visitors and residents, and that aligns well with our mission.”

The station move from Rhett and River to Caine Halter Family YMCA is scheduled for January 20. The relocation from Sterling Community Center to Fluor Field is not yet scheduled, but should take place by the start of spring, according to B-cycle staff.

Greenville B-cycle offers adult-sized bicycles that members can check out and return at conveniently located stations. Once the relocations are complete, stations will be located at:  Greenville Zoo, Hughes Main Library, County Square, City Hall, the Greenville Transit Center, Fluor Field, Caine Halter Family YMCA and at the corner of College and North Main Street. Day memberships are $5 and can be purchased at kiosks or online. Annual memberships are $60 and can be purchased online only.
