IRMO, SC – An additional 12 Lexington-Richland School District Five teachers have earned the prestigious National Board Certification this year, and 28 teachers in District Five renewed their national certifications for a second 10-year certification period.

District Five had the third highest number of new National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) in the state. Statewide 136 South Carolina teachers earned National Board certification this year. The Palmetto State now has 8,820 teachers with the credential, making it one of the nation’s leading states for NBCTs in the nation behind Florida and North Carolina, which has 13,637 and 20,611 National Board certified educators respectively. Currently, a total of 352 District Five teachers have National Board Certifications.

District Five Superintendent Dr. Stephen Hefner said, “District Five is committed to providing quality education for all its students and that starts with having well-trained, world-class educators. We commend our newest National Board-certified teachers and thank them for the extra steps they have taken to ensure we have exceptional classroom instruction in District Five.”

National Board certification is a voluntary, advanced teaching credential that includes an extensive series of performance-based assessments. Educators pursuing the certification must undergo a rigorous process that includes teaching portfolios, student work samples, videotapes and thorough analyses of the candidates’ classroom teaching and student learning. Teachers must also complete written exercises to gauge the depth of their subject-matter knowledge, as well as their effectiveness in teaching those subjects to their students.
